Welcome to the Laboratory of Southeastern Archaeology
Housed within the Department of Anthropology, the Laboratory of Southeastern Archaeology (LSA) is the physical and intellectual base for faculty and students devoted to the archaeology of Florida and the greater American Southeast. Active field projects offer research opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students seeking careers in professional archaeology. The LSA houses research collections from sites in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, as well as the equipment and space for analysis and reporting. Headed by Professor Kenneth E. Sassaman, the LSA is a beneficiary of the Hyatt and Cici Brown Endowment for Florida Archaeology.
Mission Statement
The Laboratory of Southeastern Archaeology (LSA) exists to address the research, educational, and public service opportunities, as well as responsibilities, of archaeological inquiry in Florida and beyond. The LSA is one of several units of the University of Florida, like the Florida Museum of Natural History, that promotes and administers archaeological field investigations throughout the state.
As a unit of the Department of Anthropology, the research agenda of the LSA is shaped largely by the interests of participating students, in collaboration with and under the guidance of department faculty. All LSA participants are expected to (1) abide by the ethical standards of the profession; (2) make an intellectual commitment to developing knowledge about the past; and (3) foster alliances with government, the public, and all others who value cultural heritage.
